Types of Bitumen

1. Penetration Bitumen:
This type of bitumen is directly obtained from crude oil distillation and is categorized based on its penetration grade, such as 60/70 or 80/100. Penetration bitumen is widely used in road construction and asphalt paving due to its good resistance to pressure and temperature variations.

2. Blown Bitumen (Oxidized Bitumen):
In this type, air is injected into hot base bitumen to increase its viscosity. This process makes blown bitumen more stable under heat. It is commonly used in the production of waterproofing membranes (e.g., bituminous sheets) and insulation industries. Its grading is usually indicated by two numbers, such as 115/15 (softening point / penetration grade).

3. Bitumen Emulsion:
This bitumen type is produced in liquid form using water and emulsifying agents. Bitumen emulsions are suitable for projects requiring application at low temperatures or where quick setting is important, such as pothole repairs or surface coatings without heating.

4. Modified Bitumen (Polymer-Modified Bitumen):
This bitumen is blended with polymers to enhance its mechanical properties and thermal resistance. Polymer-modified bitumen is an excellent choice for highways, harsh climate regions, and specialized projects that demand long-lasting durability.

5. Natural Bitumen:
Obtained from natural sources such as bitumen mines, natural bitumen typically has high purity. It is mostly used in paint industries, rubber manufacturing, and specific industrial compounds.
