What is Bitumen and What Are Its Types?
Bitumen is a black, sticky substance derived from the refining process of crude oil and plays a vital role in various industries. One of its main characteristics is its waterproof nature, which makes it an ideal choice for insulation, waterproofing (such as bituminous sheets), and road construction. At room temperature, bitumen is solid, but it becomes easy to use when heated.
Bitumen is generally classified into two main types: natural bitumen and petroleum (refined) bitumen. Natural bitumen is extracted directly from mines, while petroleum bitumen is produced through the distillation of crude oil in refineries. In construction and roadwork projects, refined bitumen is mostly used.
Based on performance and softening point, bitumen is available in different grades such as 60/70, 85/100, 40/50, and 20/10. The choice of grade depends on the type of project. For example, in tropical regions, bitumen with higher viscosity is used to resist high temperatures.
There is also another classification known as Viscosity Grade bitumen, which includes VG10, VG30, and VG40. These grades are often used in specialized projects and for export purposes.
Choosing the right type of bitumen can extend the lifespan of a project and reduce future maintenance costs. Therefore, understanding the types of bitumen is highly important for contractors, consultants, and bulk buyers.
